Isn't it glorious how Technology destroys ancient culture!? Nowadays we don't worry so much about pleasing the gods as pleasing ourselves. Screw 'the gods!' We giggle at those 'gods' nowadays. We flip them The Bird.
But this leaves us alone with Technology. And Technology is only a byproduct of Science. And what is Science?

Nowadays we don't worry much about Jesus' return, or The Apocolypse. No. Not at all. Nowadays we worry about Rogue Asteroids and Global Warming. Science has taught us what we really need to worry about! At the same time, Science has presented us with a methodology to combat those worrisome ideas. We find ourselves at war with an unruly universe. And we seem to understand that WE are not alone in a gigantic Universe. If and when we learn how to defeat Global Warming and Rogue Asteroids, we already understand that another challenge is waiting in the wings ready to destroy us. Aliens. Our naughty nextdoor neighbors!
